What is inside the lock on your front door
Almost every residential lock in Destin is a pin tumbler. Strip away the finish and the decoration and there are only a handful of parts.
The outer body is the shell, sometimes called the housing. Inside it a cylinder called the plug rotates — that is the part with the keyhole, and the part your key turns. Drilled down through both, in a neat row, are several chambers. Each chamber holds a spring, then a solid pin sitting under it, then a shorter pin beneath that resting in the plug. The upper ones are driver pins; the lower ones are key pins.
With no key inserted, the springs push everything down, and the driver pins straddle the join between plug and shell. That join is called the shear line. A pin lying across the shear line is a mechanical block: the plug physically cannot rotate.
The key's job is a single, elegant thing. Each of the peaks and valleys cut into its edge lifts the pin stack in one chamber by exactly the right amount, so that the meeting point between key pin and driver pin lands level with the shear line. Get every chamber right simultaneously and there is nothing crossing the join any more, so the plug turns, the cam or tailpiece on the back turns with it, and the bolt moves. Get one chamber wrong and nothing moves at all — which is why a key that is nearly right feels exactly like a key that is completely wrong.
What a key actually is
A key is two pieces of information stamped into a piece of brass.
The first is the keyway — the wiggly profile of the blade seen end-on. It has to match the matching grooves inside the plug or the key will not physically enter. This is why the wrong blank cannot be forced into the wrong lock, and why locksmiths keep walls of different blanks. Some keyways are open to anyone, sold in every hardware aisle. Others are restricted, meaning the blanks are controlled and a copy cannot be made over the counter by a departing tenant.
The second is the bitting — the sequence of cut depths along the edge. Manufacturers work in a fixed set of depths, often numbered, so a key is really a short string of digits. "Cutting a key to code" means producing it from that string of numbers alone, without needing an original to trace.
That distinction explains a common frustration. A key copied from a copy from a copy drifts a little each time, because tracing machines follow the previous key's wear rather than the original numbers. Eventually you have a key that works only if you lift the handle and hold your mouth right. The fix is not another copy; it is a key cut fresh to the correct depths.
What rekeying changes — and what it does not
Rekeying means taking the plug out, replacing the key pins with a different combination of lengths, and matching a new key to them. The lock stays on the door. The finish, the handle, the bolt, the strike, the holes in the door — all untouched.
What changes: every old key stops working, permanently. What does not change: the quality of the lock. A rekeyed weak lock is a weak lock with a new key. Rekeying is about who has access, not about how much force the door will resist.
The everyday cases for it are the obvious ones. You bought a house and have no idea how many keys are in circulation from the previous owner, their family, contractors and the old cleaner. A key went missing rather than was returned. A relationship ended. A tenancy changed. In every one of those, the question is access, so the answer is rekeying.
One useful bonus: several locks with different keys can usually be rekeyed to a single key, so the front door, back door and garage entry door all take one key instead of three. That is normal residential work and it removes the reason most people leave a door unlocked in the first place, which is fumbling.
Rekey, replace, or re-core: choosing between them
Rekey when the hardware is sound and the only problem is who might hold a key. Fastest, least invasive, no change to the look of the door.
Replace when the lock is worn out, the finish has failed, the bolt no longer throws fully, or the lock is simply not strong enough for where it is. Also replace when you are changing what the door does — adding a keypad, moving to a different handle set, going from a knob to a lever for accessibility.
Re-core applies to a family of locks built around removable cores, more common in commercial settings but occasionally found in larger homes. A special control key lets the whole keyed core lift out and a fresh one drop in, which turns a rekey into a seconds-long swap. If your locks work that way, say so when you call, because it changes the plan.
Latch, bolt, and why the difference matters
The spring latch is the angled tongue that clicks shut on its own when you close the door. Its job is convenience: it holds the door in the frame. Its shape means it retracts under sideways pressure, which is exactly what you want when you pull the door shut and exactly what you do not want as your only security.
The deadbolt is a squared-off bar with no spring. Nothing retracts it but the key or the thumbturn. That is the whole point of the word "dead" — no live spring, no give.
Two things about a deadbolt matter more than the brand on the box. Throw is how far the bolt projects when fully extended; a full-throw residential deadbolt reaches about an inch into the frame, and a bolt that only makes it halfway because the door has dropped is doing a fraction of its job. And a deadbolt that engages only the thin door jamb rather than the structural framing behind it is anchored to trim, not to house.
Grades on the box: what Grade 1, 2 and 3 mean
Residential and commercial locks in this country are commonly rated on a three-level scale published jointly by the industry standards bodies. It is a durability and strength rating tested in a laboratory, not a marketing tier.
Grade 3 is the basic residential level. It passes the entry-level cycle and strength tests and it is what most builders fit by default. Grade 2 is a genuine step up in cycle life and resistance, and it is the sweet spot for a front door on a home you care about. Grade 1 is the commercial specification: many times the cycle count, substantially higher force tolerances, and hardware built to be serviced rather than discarded.
The grade tells you how it survives use and abuse. It does not tell you how the cylinder resists manipulation, which is a separate question entirely and one where the useful signals are things like whether the maker publishes any security-cylinder features at all. For most Destin homes, a Grade 2 deadbolt properly installed in a properly reinforced frame is a bigger real-world improvement than a Grade 1 deadbolt in a weak one.
The cheapest upgrade in the trade: the strike and its screws
The strike plate is the metal plate on the frame that the bolt enters. On a great many houses it is fixed with two short screws that bite only into the soft trim.
Replacing those with long screws that reach through the jamb into the structural stud behind it costs almost nothing and changes the arithmetic of a forced door completely, because the load is transferred into framing instead of into a strip of pine. A box strike — the kind with a metal cup behind it rather than a simple hole — helps for the same reason.

The door is not the lock
Plenty of "my lock is broken" calls are not about the lock. Doors in this climate move. Humidity swells timber; a Gulf summer swells it a lot. Hinges loosen and the door drops at the latch edge. Frames shift. Any of those and the bolt no longer lines up with its hole in the strike, so the bolt grinds, or throws only partway, or the door has to be pushed or lifted before the key will turn.
The tell is easy to read: if the key turns freely with the door standing open, the lock is fine and the alignment is not. Fixing that is adjusting hinges, tightening or repositioning the strike, or easing the mortise — not buying a new lock. A locksmith who replaces the hardware on a misaligned door has sold you a part that will fail the same way.
Car keys in one section
House keys are purely mechanical. Car keys stopped being purely mechanical decades ago, and that is the whole reason for the price difference people find so surprising.
Inside the plastic head of nearly every car key made since the late nineties is a transponder — a tiny chip with no battery of its own. Turn the key and the car briefly energises it through a coil around the ignition; the chip answers with an identifier; the immobiliser module checks that identifier against its stored list before allowing the engine to run. A key cut correctly but never programmed will turn the ignition and the engine will still refuse. It is not a faulty copy. It is a key the car has never been introduced to.
So a car key job is two jobs — a cutting job and a programming job — and the second one needs equipment specific to the vehicle. That is also why having a spare made while you still hold a working key is dramatically simpler than starting from none.
A word on keypads and smart locks
Electronic locks change the credential, not the physics. Behind a keypad there is still a bolt, still a strike, still a door that has to be aligned. A code replaces a key, which solves the problem of handing metal to people and creates a new one: codes get shared and rarely get retired.
The most common electronic-lock failure has nothing to do with electronics. It is a motor being asked to drive a bolt into a hole it does not quite line up with, running its batteries flat trying. Fit the mechanics properly and the electronics behave.
Vocabulary, so the next quote makes sense
Backset — distance from the door edge to the centre of the bore hole, usually two and three-eighths or two and three-quarter inches. Get it wrong and the hardware will not fit.
Bore — the large round hole through the door face for the lock body.
Cam and tailpiece — the little arm or flat tongue on the back of a cylinder that transfers your turn into the mechanism.
Handing — which side the hinges are on and which way the door swings. Levers and some locks are handed; ask before ordering.
Keyed alike — several locks sharing one key. Keyed different — the opposite.
Escutcheon — the decorative plate around a cylinder or handle.
Thumbturn — the inside knob that throws a deadbolt without a key.
Before you call anyone
Check the obvious three. Does the key turn with the door open? If yes, it is alignment, not the lock. Does the problem happen from one side only? That narrows it to a specific part of the mechanism. Has anything changed recently — a new screen door, a repainted frame, a storm? Those move doors.
